Digital Ability has risen slightly since 2021, with the national average increasing 0.5 points to 64.9 in 2023.

Digital Ability levels are unequally distributed across the population. For those who did not complete secondary school, Digital Ability scores are 26.4 points below the national average, down from 24.1 points below the average in 2020. People with a bachelor’s degree or higher record a Digital Ability score of 11.0 points above the national average, up slightly (0.1 point) from 2020 levels. Likewise, for people in the lowest income quintile, Digital Ability scores have fallen since 2020 and currently sit 21.3 points below the national average. For those on the highest income quintile, Digital Ability scores have risen slightly since 2020, currently sitting at 14.2 points above the national average. This suggests gaps in digital skills are growing in line with wider social inequalities.

Digital Ability scores align closely with age.18–34-year-olds register a Digital Ability score of 82.9. This is 18.0 points higher than the national score (64.9), and 59.6 points higher than for Australians over the age of 75 (23.3). This gap in Digital Ability between young and old has grown since 2020.
